RIDDOR and ISO 45001:2018

RIDDOR – Are You Meeting Your Legal Reporting Duties?

Under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR), employers, the self-employed, and those in control of work premises have a legal duty to report certain serious workplace incidents. These include:

  • Work-related accidents resulting in death or specified injuries
  • Diagnosed cases of certain occupational diseases
  • Dangerous occurrences (near-miss events with the potential to cause harm)

Failure to report such incidents can result in enforcement action by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and may indicate broader weaknesses in your organisation’s health and safety management system.

Why It Matters for ISO 45001

While RIDDOR is a legal requirement, it also aligns closely with the principles of ISO 45001, the international standard for occupational health and safety management. Clause 10 of ISO 45001 focuses on incident investigation and continual improvement, making accurate and timely reporting a key part of demonstrating compliance and driving safety performance.

By integrating RIDDOR reporting into your ISO 45001 framework, you can:

  • Ensure legal compliance
  • Improve incident response and root cause analysis
  • Strengthen your safety culture
  • Provide evidence of due diligence to regulators and stakeholders
What You Should Do

To meet your obligations under RIDDOR, you should:

  • Understand which incidents are reportable under the regulations
  • Ensure all staff know how and when to report incidents
  • Maintain accurate records of all reportable events
  • Review and analyse incidents to prevent recurrence
  • Integrate reporting procedures into your ISO 45001 management system
