Planned Changes for ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & ISO 45001?
When are changes planned to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001?
We’ve written recently about planned updates to ISO 9001 and whilst it’s some time away it’s worthwhile not only summarising what we know at this point but also considering the other core standards most organisations are certified to.
There’s much speculation about what may or may not be included in the new standards but what we do know for certain is that The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is revising its key management standards: ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management). These updates aim to align the standards with evolving industry practices, technological advancements, and global challenges.
ISO 9001: Quality Management System Standard
The latest Committee Draft of ISO 9001 revisions is under review. Here’s the timeline:
- Draft International Standard (DIS): Expected for public comment towards the end of 2025.
- Final Draft International Standard (FDIS): Anticipated availability in May-June 2026.
- Publication of ISO 9001:2026: Expected in September 2026.
While definitive changes are still under discussion, key focus areas include enhancing risk management, resilience, opportunities, digital transformation, sustainability, and supply chain management.
ISO 14001: Environmental Management System Standard
The current version is ISO 14001:2015. Here’s the timeline for updates:
- Draft International Standard (DIS): Expected between February and May 2025.
- Final Draft International Standard (FDIS): Due in December 2025.
- Publication of the new version: Expected in January 2026.
The draft update aims to clarify existing requirements without introducing new ones. Key changes include:
- Adaptation to the latest version of ISO’s Harmonised Structure for management system standards.
- Rephrasing current requirements and adding notes for better clarity.
- Enhancing guidance in Annex A for key topics.
ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety Management System Standard
The current version is ISO 45001:2018. The revision has been approved and is now in the planning phase, with the reviewed version likely to be published in 2027.
